Counting Crows

August & Everything After   Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings (Eco)  Hard Candy

Counting Crows is an American rock band that formed in 1991 in Berkeley, California. They reached mainstream popularity with the release of their first album in 1993, August and Everything After. The track "Mr. Jones" received wide airplay.

The band took its name from a divination rhyme about the crow, heard by Adam Duritz in the film Signs of Life. But it is a much older English nursery rhyme which had to do with predicting the future from the numbers of birds one sees.

Originally the rhyme was about magpies, but as it traveled to America, crows were used instead. A popular superstition is that if one sees a single magpie, one should greet it to deflect the "sorrow".

A version of the rhyme begins in the third verse of the band's song "A Murder of One" on the album August and Everything After.

"Well I dreamt I saw you walking up a hillside in the snow
Casting shadows on the winter sky as you stood there,
counting crows.
One for sorrow, two for joy
Three for girls and four for boys
Five for silver, six for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told."
